Some of the illustrators I work with were very busy on their blogs this week.

Justin Gerard has been doing a series called “Portraits of Monsters,” and this week he posted a gem. You can follow this series here on his blog.

Cory Godbey has been writing about his oil painting process, and he’s almost finished with this piece.

Zach Franzen’s blog is fun to read on a number of levels, but recently he posted this portrait of Abe Lincoln.

Lightlings and Prince’s Poison Cup Animation

August 26, 2009 :: Filed under Blog

Over the last few years, Portland Studios has partnered with Ligonier Ministries on two picture books written by best-selling author R.C. Sproul. Both The Lightlings and Prince’s Poison Cup were illustrated by Justin Gerard.

Last year, Ligonier approached Portland Studios about creating an animated version of the two picture books. Taking artwork from a picture book and translating that into animation was an interesting challenge, but the end result is really nice. This style of animated, moving-pictures is becoming more and more common, so I think Ligonier is definitely on to something. You can see the trailers that Ligonier created below.

The main animator for this project was Danny McNight from Portland Studios. Zach Franzen also helped with storyboards and animation.

If you’re not familiar with the Flight Anthologies, I would encourage you to check it out as soon as you can. Flight was created and edited by Kazu Kibuishi, who is also the author of the Amulet Series.

Cory Godbey was invited to contribute to the most recent edition. He illustrated a 40 page, wordless story entitled Walters, and you can read all about his process and see some of the illustrations here at his blog.

Watercolor Gnome

gnome

Gnomes are somehow creepy and cute at the same time. I find that the longer you stare at them the creepier they get, but as long as you keep them in your periph, you’re fine. This little guy will be accompanying me at my desk for the time being, and I’m pretty sure he’s muttering magical blessings on me at all times.

Thanks to Cory Godbey for this wonderful watercolor! He painted a handful of these while we were sitting at the Portland Studios booth at Comic-Con a few weeks ago. Visit his store if you’re interested in any of his artwork.

I’m happy to announce, (and very proud of my good friend and client Cory Godbey), that Gallery Nucleus will be featuring some of the original artwork from Terrible Yellow Eyes.

Here’s the announcement from Nucleus.

If you’re not familiar, Cory Godbey is the creator and curator of the Terrible Yellow Eyes online gallery. In his own words:

What I’ve wanted to do for sometime is make a collection of paintings inspired by Where the Wild Things Are as a tribute and celebration of the book. And now with the release of the film later in the year, the world of Wild Things has opened even wider.

My goal for this project is really just that, expressing of my love for the story. None of the art has been done for any profit but has all been created out of admiration for Maurice Sendak and Where the Wild Things Are.

Here are a few of my personal favorites from the online gallery:

Featured here:
Mike Boldt, Cory Godbey, Pascal Campion, Justin Gerard, Ana GalvaƱ, Shaun Pendergast, Shannon Bonatakis, and Clay Sisk.

Justin Gerard – Oil Paintings

Recently Justin Gerard opened up an Etsy shop where he plans to sell prints, but today he’s also adding several original oil paintings that he prepared for MicroVisions back in April.

These oils and several other prints will be available this morning at 10:00 AM.
